Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) is the first line therapy for sleep apnea and is a very effective treatment. It involves pressurized air that is delivered to your airway to keep it open throughout the night. This is accomplished by a machine at your bedside and a mask that is worn during sleep.
It can be intimidating to use initially but we will help you get started and continue to work with you until you are comfortable with the therapy.
The Types of PAP machines are:
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP):
CPAP is one of the best and most effective treatments for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). CPAP machines deliver a constant, but gentle pressure through your nose and into the back of your throat. The pressure works to keep your upper airway open, allowing normal breathing during sleep.
Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (Bilevel):
Bilevel has two pressures, a higher when you breathe in and a lower pressure when breathing out. If there is difficulty controlling sleep apnea with CPAP then Bilevel therapy can be utilized.
Adaptive Servo-Ventilation (ASV):
ASV was designed to treat central and complex sleep apnea. The ASV device monitors breathing patterns constantly throughout the night and manages the pressures to ensure your breathing is regular. The support provided by adaptive servo-ventilation therapy stabilizes your breathing pattern throughout the night.
Starting with PAP therapy:
Once you have had a consultation with our sleep team and if you are diagnosed with sleep apnea then we will formulate a plan, determine your pressure and get you started on treatment. After we begin therapy with PAP we will continue to monitor and follow your progress.
